Adventures in Sewing: Skinny Bitch Curvy Chick Gibson Blouse SB300

It's been a while since I done an Adventure in Sewing. Since I recently posted a guide to petite and petiteable sewing patterns, I thought I'd try one from a brand that gets great reviews from petite sewists. Previously, I have only sewn "petiteable" patterns, which are patterns for women of average height but have petite cutting lines. This time, I wanted to make a garment from a pattern specifically drafted for petites. Hence, the Skinny Bitch Curvy Chick Gibson Blouse SB300

The pattern comes in RTW dress sizes XXS-L, which I welcome. I dislike how major brand sewing patterns (Butterick, McCall's New Look, Simplicity, and Vogue) come 1958 sizing which is confusing for people who often wear RTW clothing. I cut out the XS and graded it to XXS at the waist and hip. This pattern was, for the most part, very well drafted. If you make the sleeveless version the pattern drafting quality is 5 stars. The only part I didn't like was the sleeves, which are horrifically drafted so I drafted my own from scratch. I made a couple of adjustments to this pattern: I lowered the raised waist, so that it would sit naturally closer to my own waistline. I also shortened the longtail back.

Even though most of the pattern pieces were well drafted, I wish the instructions were more thorough. I am used to the thoroughness of Butterick/Simplicity/McCall's instructions, which are basically idiotproof. For example, the Gibson Blouse did not have any instructions for button and buttonhole placement, so I had to guess where to put the buttons and buttonholes.

Would I sew this again? Probably not. The instructions are too sparse for my liking. Would I recommend this pattern? Yes, but only if you are going to sew the sleeveless version. It's a 5/5 pattern for that, but if you want sleeves, be prepared to draft your own.

Petite Sewing Pattern Brands

Petite fashion bloggers often talk about shopping for clothes that fit. But what about those of us who want to sew our own clothes? Finding sewing patterns in petite sizes is often a chore and many of us don't want to figure out how to shorten a pattern by ourselves. I have created this handy dandy guide to which pattern companies draft patterns for people of particular heights.

La Senza Hello Sugar Up 2 Cup Push Up - A Review

Review of La Senza Hello Sugar Up 2 Cup Push Up bra

La Senza is probably the most well known and popular lingerie brand in Canada. Although I have owned La Senza bras since I was a teen, this is my very first review of a La Senza bra. For years I was wearing poorly fitting 32B and 34B bras in this brand. But in recent years, they have started carrying 30 band bras. However, in recent years they have been carrying sizes 30A-D. As I have a poorly fitting Victoria's Secret Very Sexy Bombshell Add-2-cups Push-up, I decided to finally buy a La Senza Hello Sugar Up 2 Cup Push Up in 30D to see if it is a good replacement.

Band Size: Good! I like my bands loose. This is a 30 band bra that stretches out to 32.75"

Cup Size: Good. This bra runs true to size in overall cup volume.

Cup Shape: Good. It works for shallow and broad rooted types. It is very open at the top edge of the cup. Good for tall rooted and/or FOT shapes. Not so good for short rooted and/or FOB shapes.

Cup Spacing and Center Gore: Good. 1" cup separation. It's a little bit closer together spaced than the VS Very Sexy Bombshell. I also like how the gore is very low.

Color: Great. I like the Rose Tan colour.

Verdict: This bra gets a 100% rating. Although it looks like the cups are gapping at top edges of the cups, that was before I swoop and scooped. Also, I'm holding the tablet awkwardly. Selfies with tablets are hard!

Victoria's Secret Dream Angels Demi - A Review

Review of Victoria's Secret Dream Angels Demi bra

Although Victoria's Secret is the #1 selling brand of bras in the United States, this is my very first review of a Victoria's Secret bra. Why? Because for years, they stubbornly tried to fit everyone into sizes 32A-38E. However, in recent years they have been carrying sizes 30A-D and "G" cup sizes (which are really F cup sizes in UK sizing). Since early 2019 they have been carrying 30A-D sizes in select stores, so I decided to finally buy a 30 band bra after having tried them in store a year ago. I like the Dream Angels and Very Sexy lines so I decided to give it a go with the Dream Angels Demi bra in 30D.

Band Size: Surprisingly tighter than most Victoria's Secret bras! Victoria's Secret is known for having loose bra bands that stretch out quickly. Normally, if you buy a 32 band bra it'll be 34" when it's new and stretch out to 37" over time. This is a 30 band bra and the band stretched out to only 31". I'm impressed.

Cup Size: Good. This bra runs true to size in overall cup volume.

Cup Shape: Good. It works for slightly to moderately shallow shapes and is very open at the top edges of the cups. Great shape for FOT or tall rooted types.

Cup Spacing and Center Gore: Good. 0.875" cup separation. Great for far apart spaced people, not great for close together spaced people.

Color: Fine. I like plain white.

Verdict: This bra gets a 100% rating. I'm happy that Victoria's Secret has finally started to pay attention to diversity in body sizes and has made a good bra for people with a tall rooted, slightly to moderately shallow shape.

Trying on Victoria's Secret 30 band bras in store

Victoria's Secret is the oft-maligned lingerie retail giant that we all love to diss. Infamous for their narrow-minded standards of model selection and size offerings, I declined to step foot into their stores for years. On A Bra That Fits I heard that they had expanded their 30 band bras to A-D cups and that sizes 30A-D were finally available in store! Being naturally curious, I decided to take a peek. Before I hopped in my car, I first called a nearby store to confirm they had 30 bands in stock. The manager said that some stores do and some stores do not, so it's always good to call ahead and figure out which ones have them. Thus, she recommended that I go to a different nearby store which did carry the 30 bands. Lesson learned? Always do your research beforehand.

When I arrived at the store, I saw a fairly large selection of 30A-D bras. Unfortunately, the vast majority were in 30A-C. There was a small bucket full of 30D bras so that is what I chose to try:

First up is the Very Sexy Push-Up Bra in 30D. Band fits great, not too tight, not too loose. The cups ran true to size too. Nothing to complain about in the shape, all around a solid bra, but nothing special to say about it either.

Next up is the Body by Victoria Perfect Shape Bra in 30D. As Body by Victoria is the Victoria's Secret default line of bras, I was expecting an "almost universal" fit. Unfortunately this was not the case. The band is great, not too loose, not too tight, but the cup shape leaves much to be desired. The top edges of the cups cut into my flesh somewhat. Thereby, I declare this bra not a great fit for tall rooted shapes. If you have short roots this may fit you.

Finally, we have the Dream Angels Demi Bra in 30D. This was the best of the bunch. The band was not too loose, not too tight, and the cup shape fit just right. If you want a good comparison, think of this bra as a version of the b.tempt'd Ciao Bella only better in every single way. The Dream Angels Demi provides a similar amount of coverage, but the underwire doesn't go up nearly as high at the gore. It's more comfortable for someone with low bodyfat and thus sensitive to prominent underwires at the gore. The cups on this bra are also set somewhat closer than the Ciao Bella, so great news for close-spaced and average-spaced people. Finally, the top edges of the cups do not dig into one's flesh! Great news for those of us who may be tall rooted or FOT.

Conclusion: Although Victoria's Secret has been the subject of the bra fitting community's scorn, they have been making improvements in their size range and fit. For many years VS bras have had bands that ran way too large; it seems that with these new 30 band bras they are true to size in the band. The Very Sexy Push-Up provides a "near-universal fit", the Body by Victoria Perfect Shape may be a good choice for people with tall roots, and the Dream Angel Demi is a good choice for people who like the b.tempt'd Ciao Bella but have issues with the high underwires at the gore and far-apart cup spacing.

Adore Me Retail Store Review

Adore Me has is a digital native lingerie brand that is going brick and mortar! Founded in 2012, it offers women a large variety of bras online in band sizes 30-46, cup sizes A-G. When I heard that their physical store was opening, I had to take a look inside.

When I first walked in, I was greeted by multiple salespeople. They had 5 employees working but few customers.

Their selection of bras in-store is not that great. Although they had a plethora of bras in 32-34, A-E, they only had a few 30 band bras and only in B-C cups. I still recommend shopping with Adore Me online but their retail store leaves much to be desired.
