Breast Shape and Separation

Have you ever noticed that when you try on two different bras in the same size and same brand , one might fit great while another fits terribly? As there are many different breast sizes, there are also many different breast shapes and levels of separation. Today I will discuss two common breast shapes, three common levels of breast separation.

Shallow breasts with broad roots
Deep breasts with narrow roots

Shallow breast broad root

These breasts have a base with a large radius, but do not stick out very far horizontally. The diameter of the root is much larger than the depth. Many women with smaller cup sizes (A-DD) have this shape . Most of the breast tissue clings closely to the ribcage. Here is a diagram of how shallow breasts with broad roots look with far-apart separation, medium separation, and close together separation.

 Projected breast narrow root

These breasts have a base with a smaller radius and stick out a lot horizontally. Many women with larger cup sizes have this shape, but many larger breasted women also have the shallow breast broad root shape. Most of the breast tissue sticks right out. Here is a diagram of how projected breasts with narrow roots look with far-apart separation, medium separation, and close together separation.

Levels of breast separation

If your breasts are three or four fingers widths apart at the sternum, you have far-apart separation breasts. If your breasts are one or two fingers widths apart at the sternum, you have medium separation breasts. If your breasts are touching, you have close together separation breasts.

Bra Model Suggestions

As I have shallow breasts with broad roots that are far apart, I suggest the following bras for people with my breast shape depending on level of separation:

Shallow breast broad root far-apart separation - most b.tempt'd bras
Shallow breast broad root medium separation - Betsey Johnson Stocking Stripe Lined Demi
Projected breast narrow root far-apart separation - Panache Tango Plunge
Projected breast narrow root medium separation - most Freya bras
