Gilly Hicks carries 30 bands! Affordable bras online, A-C cups

While the Gilly Hicks brand is now gone from the brick-and-mortar retail scene, it still has a considerable online presence. Sister brand to preppy staple Abercrombie & Fitch, Gilly Hicks is its "cheeky cousin". For the first few years of its existence, Gilly Hicks only sold 32-36 bands, AA-DD cups. However, since the brand has gone completely online, Gilly Hicks has started to offer bras in 30 bands, although in limited cup sizes (A-C). This is a good development from them especially since they are competing with other mainstream brands targeted towards young women (Aerie, VS Pink). The styles come in demi and plunge, and the plunge bras come in synthetic, cotton, and lace materials. Colors are bright and girly, as should be expected. The best part about all of this is that all of the bras are $15 for the holiday season. Even the regular prices were $30 and under. Gilly Hicks is a great brand for young women who love girly, bright, and pastel colors, need a 30 band in cups A-C, and are on a strict budget.

Gossard Beau Plunge - A Review

Review of Gossard Beau Plunge Bra

After trying on several styles in Betsey Johnson and b.tempt'd, I decided to branch out and try a 30 band bra in a different brand. Gossard and Parfait both came to mind. After a fellow member of the bra-fitting community contacted me about swapping bras, I decided to switch out my ill-fitting Panache Zara in 28DD for a Gossard Beau Plunge in 30D. The Panache Zara 28DD felt like it was really a 28E or 28F. The wires were too wide and although I filled out the cup at the top, there was empty fabric at the bottom of the cup.

Band Size: Excellent. It is a firm 30 band that stretches to 29.5". It would be good for anyone who is in between 28 and 30 bands.

Cup Size: The 30D bra's cups run true to size.

Cup Shape: This bra is better than most. It has medium wires and the projection is average. After I scooped and swooped I filled out the cup.

Cup Spacing and Centre Gore: Good. The gore is low as it is a plunge bra. It has good cup separation for my far-apart spaced breasts

Verdict: This is 88% a good bra. Go for this bra if you have medium roots, far-apart spaced breasts, are slightly shallow, and have even fullness. I look forward to buying other bras of similar cut in the future.

Diversity in Lingerie: Nubian Skin bras for diverse skin tones and sizes

Last time I blogged about the Diversity in Lingerie campaign, I informed you about how the lingerie industry likes to call lighter skin tones "Nude" while completely ignoring the fact that most women in the world have darker skin tones than that. Nubian Skin, a UK lingerie and hosiery company, comes to our rescue. Currently they have bras, panties, and hosiery four shades: (from darkest to lightest) Berry, Cinnamon, Caramel, and Cafe au Lait. These shades fit a variety of darker and medium skin toned women and are a wonderful development. You can check out their skin tone chart here for help on deciding which color to order.

And if that wasn't exciting enough, Nubian Skin also sells bras that are outside the bra matrix! While they do sell bras in 32-36 bands, B-DD cups, they also sell 30 band bras in B-DD cups. This is a huge improvement on the now-defunct MySkins, who only produced bra-matrix sizes.

I only wish that Nubian Skin would produce a few more shades in their lingerie coloring. Four non-light shades are a good start, but it would be nice to see one or two more shades that are lighter than Cafe au Lait, perhaps one with a yellow based hue.

Kohls now carries Parfait by Affinitas! 30 bands in all styles and 28 bands in select styles!

Kohl's has long been known as a value based department store chain; they sell lots of basic clothing items at reasonable prices. For a very long time, they sold primarily bras in bra matrix sizes (32-38 bands, A-DD cups). However, they recently decided to carry Parfait by Affinitas at their online store. They carry twelve styles of bras. Eleven of the twelve styles come in 30-40, D-G. However, Parfait's best selling style, the Charlotte Padded Bra, comes in 28-40, D-K. This is  huge development for Kohl's and I hope they carrry Parfait bras in 30 bands in store in the future.

Of the twelve lovely styles they carry online, here are a couple of my favorites:

Bloomingdales has 30 band bras!

Many of you already know that of the mass-retailers, Nordstrom and Dillard's carry 30 band bras in store while Aerie carries them online. We can now add Bloomingdales to the list. They carry a variety of 30 band bras by Chantelle, Simone Perele, Natori, and Calvin Klein. I don't know whether they carry it in all stores (they certainly carry them in their New York stores) or whether it is online only. Either way, this is a boon for us in the bra-fitting community.

Why does Cleo name its bras after Peanuts characters?

Maybe you have noticed for a while now, or maybe this is the first time anyone has pointed this out to you. Does anyone besides me find it weird/strange/interesting that Cleo, a brand made by Panache that caters to younger women, likes to name their bras after Peanuts characters? I think it is cute and endearing of them to do this, and I wonder whether it is intentional or just a coincidence.

First up is the Lucy. I believe that this is the most popular Cleo model, and it is great for anyone who has average spaced breasts, broad roots, and projection at the bottom (FOB). Many women love this bra, although some have said its gore is too high/wide. When I think of the Cleo Lucy, Ithink of the sarcastic and witty older brother of Linus, Lucy van Pelt. She is awesomely funny, wise, and full of pranks.

The next most popular Cleo bra in my opinion is the Marcie. Made for women who have broad roots but have a lot of projection at the top (FOT), this bra features a somewhat narrower gore although it is still high. The Cleo Marcie reminds me of Marcie, the soft spoken voice of reason in the Peanuts gang. She is the foil to Peppermint Patty, the method behind Patty's madness.

A more unknown Cleo model is the Sally, which was only available for sale in 2011. It is a plunge bra that does not have many related models. One of the best things about a plunge bra is the low gore. It is good for people who feel irritated by underwires that go high in the center. Sally Brown, the Peanuts counterpart to the Cleo Sally, is the sweet and easygoing younger sister of Charlie Brown.

So there you have it, three bras that coincidentally (or perhaps not so coincidentally) match up with my favorite Peanuts characters. I personally would like to see a sports bra named Patty, after Peppermint Patty. It would be fitting as she has a very athletic and boisterous personality. Let me know what you think of this phenomenon.

Curvy Kate Desire - A Review

Review of Curvy Kate Desire Bra

The Roxie in 28DD was my favourite Curvy Kate bra so far. I tried the Desire in 28DD but it ran one size small in the cups. I exchanged it for the Desire in 28E and it was very good.

Band Size: Excellent. It is a stretchy 28 band bra, which is exactly what I need.

Cup Size: The cups run one size small so I ordered the 28E and it was the right size for me.

Cup Shape: This bra is better than most Curvy Kates, however it is not as good as the Roxie.

Cup Spacing and Centre Gore: Good. The gore is low, but the cups could have been spaced slightly closer together.

Verdict: This is 75% a good bra. Go for this bra if you are shallow and have far apart breasts.

OMG Half-size bras at ThirdLove!

Many women in the bra fitting community have frustrations with being in between sizes. I myself have found it extremely frustrating to not know whether I should be wearing a 30C or a 30D. I can fit into a 28DD, 30C, or 30D depending on the brand and style. However, I think that when I wear a 30 band I am really a 30C½. I just went to ThirdLove and discovered that they carry half-size bras! They come in fun colours and three styles (Plunge, Balconette, and T-Shirt).

Here is their size chart. As you can see, they have an assortment of sizes not commonly carried by other bra brands.

I highly recommend ThirdLove bras to any woman who is in between cup sizes and cannot find bras elsewhere.

Curvy Kate Roxie - A Review

Review of Curvy Kate Roxie Bra

After a somewhat successful fitting in the Curvy Kate Flaunt in 28DD, I decided to try my luck with the Roxie, also in 28DD. This was an even better bras for me than the Flaunt.

Band Size: Excellent. It is a stretchy 28 band bra, which is exactly what I need.

Cup Size: The cups were the right size for me.

Cup Shape: While the cup shape is even better than the flaunt. It is neither too shallow nor too projected. The wires are wide enough for my broad roots. This bra is for someone with even fullness, whereas the Flaunt/Elegance/Wild were for people who are FOT.

Cup Spacing and Centre Gore: Okay. While the centre gore is low, the cups could have been spaced further apart. The cup spacing is further apart than the Freya Deco Plunge and closer together than any of the Betsey Johnson bras.

Verdict: This is 88% a good bra. Go for this bra if you are slightly-moderately shallow, have wide roots, average distance between breasts, and have even fullness (neither FOT nor FOB).

Curvy Kate Flaunt - A Review

Review of Curvy Kate Flaunt Bra

After a failure with the Curvy Kate Wild in 28E and the Elegance in 28DD, I was skeptical of Curvy Kate bras. However, I decided to buy the Flaunt in 28DD since it was so beautiful. I was extremely lucky to get a bra that not only fit, but was more or less the right shape for me!

Band Size: Excellent. It is a stretchy 28 band bra, which is exactly what I need.

Cup Size: The cups were the right size for me.

Cup Shape: While the cup shape is better for me than a lot of other bras, it is still not as perfect as the Betsey Johnson Stocking Stripe bra. The good news is, it is neither too shallow nor too projected. The not-so-good news is that the projection is mostly at the top whereas with the Betsey Johnson Stocking Stripe bra the projection was more even.

Cup Spacing and Centre Gore: Good. The cups are spaced far apart and the centre gore is low enough.

Verdict: This is 80% a good bra. Go for this bra if you are slightly-moderately shallow, have wide roots, far-apart spaced breasts, and are full on top. Avoid if you are full on bottom.

28C - The hardest find in bra sizes!

28C is indeed the hardest size to find. 28 and 30 A and B are common for petite bra brands, 28 bands and above in D cups and above are common for full bust brands, 30C is common for mid sized bra brands, yet 28C is commonly ignored, even though I think that 28C occurs more commonly than 28A, 28B, and 30A.
Here are some suggestions for finding a bra in 28C:

1. Freya Deco Softcup - comes in 28C

2. ThirdLove, widely renowned for their half cup sizes (30C½, 30D½, 32B½ etc) now offer a bra in 28C!!! It is called the Plunge Perfect. It is a bra specifically created for people who are short rooted and/or are FOB:

3. TOM Girl Apparel - their yoga bra comes in sizes 28C through 28G and 30B through 30F:

4. Marks and Spencer have so many bras that come in 28C:|C--4294963149--4+24+5+20+5+20&priceMin=5&priceMax=20&currentPriceMin=5&currentPriceMax=20&lastSelectedSize=SIZE_28--4294963806--1&resultsPerPage=24&display=model&sortBy=product_is_new|1&pageChoice=1&selectedAccordions=checkbox-10

5. Skarlett Blue is a relatively new brand, having been on the market only since Winter 2014. They cover a sorely missed spot in the lingerie market: the small-band medium-cup size range. They carry 28C - 30E, 32A - 36F and have just one style in 28C: the Minx Front Close Racerback Push-up bra.

Hope this helps!

Curvy Kate Elegance - A Review

Review of Curvy Kate Elegance Bra

I did not have much luck with my previous Curvy Kate bra (the Wild). That, however, did not stop me from buying another gorgeous Curvy Kate bra. This time, I went for the Elegance in 28DD, hoping that it was the size rather than the cup shape that was wrong for me the first time I tried Curvy Kate.

Band Size: Excellent. It was as stretchy as the Wild bra was.

Cup Size: Bad. This bra was too small for me in the cup.

Cup Shape: Bad. This bra was too shallow for me and so I got a lot of empty fabric in the bottom of the cup.

Cup Spacing and Centre Gore: Good. The cup spacing and centre gore are just as good as the Wild bra was.

Verdict: This is 50% a good bra. Now I know that it is not the sizing of the bras in this range, rather it is the shape of the cup. Go for this bra if you are extremely shallow, have wide roots, and. far apart spaced breasts. Avoid it if you are projected, or only slightly shallow.
