H&M now carries swimwear in sizes 30B-D!

It's swimwear season, and cup-sized bikini tops are everywhere. What to do when it feels like most main street retailers are only carrying matrix sized (32A-38D) bikini tops? Shop at H&M

H&M isn't exactly known for having a large selection of sizes for customers, but as of late they have gotten a lot better at including curvy people in their regular clothing and people with small ribcages in their swimwear selection. This season H&M is carrying bikini tops in 30B-30D!!! This is a good start and I hope they expand their offerings in these sizes (right now only select styles come in this size range). If you need 30 band bikini tops in cup letters A or DD+ I highly recommend that you contact H&M, tell them they are doing a great job carrying sizes 30B-D, and that they'd do even better if they offered 30A and 30DD+.

If you do wear sizes 30B-30D, check out my picks for Summer 2018:

Super Push-up Bikini Top, $19.99. Classic halter style.

Super Push-up Balconette Bikini Top, $24.99. Comes with detachable straps: wear it as a spaghetti strap top or a strapless style. Lovely in basic black.

Push-up Bikini Top, $19.99. Another great halter style, has a seersucker look to it.

Sew Your Own Bra, Part II: Simplicity releases the 8560 pattern, sizes 30A-44G

Back in February, Simplicity released the 8339 pattern, a bra sewing pattern that comes in sizes 30A-44G. Now it is December and they have followed up another sports bra pattern in the same size range: the 8560. I'm liking the thicker shoulder straps on this one and the different chest/back detailing.

One thing to note is that as Simplicity is a US brand, they use inconsistent sizing nomenclature. Both this pattern and the 8339 have sizing that goes like: A, B, C, D, DD, E, F, and G so their G cup corresponds to a UK FF cup. If I had more time I would totally sew this bra in 30D. Sew both patterns and lemme know how they turn out!

On Gossamer Cotton Mesh Unlined - A Review

Review of On Gossamer Cotton Mesh Unlined bra

My Betsey Johnson Stocking Stripe finally broke...the underwire popped out of its channel so I had to throw it away. I decided to take a chance and buy a new bra so here comes the On Gossamer Cotton Mesh Unlined in 30D! This is my first blog review of an On Gossamer bra and I am very happy with the results...

Band Size: Band stretches out to 32". Doesn't feel too loose or too tight. Feels perfect.

Cup Size: Great. This bra runs true to size in overall cup volume.

Cup Shape: Great for right boob, alright for left boob. My left boob is slightly smaller than my right boob so while right boob looked perfect in this bra, there was just a tad bit of wrinkling in the left cup of this bra. My right boob has more bottom fullness and immediate projection than my left boob. This bra is made for people who have tall roots and average projection.

Cup Spacing and Center Gore: Great. The wires are flexible so they conform to my shape and spacing.

Color: Great. Can't go wrong with basic white.

Verdict: This bra gets an 100% rating. Even though there was a tad bit too much projection in the left cup, it is not On Gossamer's fault. I simply have slightly asymmetrical boobs and that's ok! It's so comfortable in every way.

Betsey Johnson Textured Mesh Plunge Push-up - A Review

Review of Betsey Johnson Textured Mesh Plunge Push-up bra

I don't often review push-up bras as most of them are uncomfortable. You may remember that back in 2015 I reviewed the Gossard Superboost Cosmetix, a bra that looked nice in the photo but didn't fit right on me. Over time I feel that the fit has gotten worse. The band did not stretch out over time at all, and maybe I have gotten bigger. I feel that I cannot fit into bras where the band stretches out to 28" or 29" even though my own snug underbust measurement is 28". I need 30" or a little bit more. It has been a very long time since I last reviewed a Betsey Johnson bra but this one in 30D looked perfect for me..

Band Size: Typical Betsey Johnson bra, so good. It's a 30 band that stretches out to a comfortable 30.5".

Cup Size: Great. This bra runs true to size in overall cup volume.

Cup Shape: Good. This bra is like typical Betsey Johnson bras: good for shallow and broad rooted types. I do wish it had more of a push-up effect though.

Cup Spacing and Center Gore: Great. Gore is .5" which is very low. Cup spacing is 1" which is fine.

Color: Unfortunately it doesn't look like in the photo. I figured that the textured mesh part would be cream, ivory, almost white, but it's more like a peachy pink.

Verdict: This bra gets almost a 100% rating. I do wish it there was more of a push-up effect and that the color was true to the photograph but it fits perfectly and I can wear it all day and it remains comfortable.

Adventures in Sewing: Simplicity 1587

It's been a while since I have posted on this blog. I've been busy with my job and with social life. I have, however, had the time to sew another great petite garment from a petiteable pattern: Simplicity 1587. Although I have been able to find a ton of great petite and juniors' size clothing at the mall and online, I also like to be able to make my own clothing. Most sewing patterns don't cater to petites, but Simplicity sometimes makes "petiteable" patterns, which are patterns for women of average height but have petite cutting lines so that shorter women can easily alter for their own height.

I have a whole bunch of home-made clothes that I wear semi-regularly: the Butterick 4985 shirt, a cotton knit maxi skirt, a bunch of summer dresses, and a kimono. I want to start getting more into dieselpunk fashion so I wanted to sew some 1940's and 1930's dresses. The Simplicity 1587 is the only dieselpunk-era sewing pattern that is petiteable so I went for it by default. The pattern comes in pattern dress sizes 6-12 (this is NOT the same as RTW dress sizes) and I chose a size 6. Unlike the Butterick 4985, I only recommend this pattern for advanced sewists for the following reason: there are too many parts to this dress. The bodice yoke was fine but the hip yoke and matching these seams at the sides was a nightmare. the hip yoke seams still don't match perfectly even after 3 or 4 attempts. The finished dress does fit great though. Another thing I don't like about the pattern is how the petite cutting lines are only for the bodice, which I used to shorten the bodice by 1". There are no petite cutting lines for the skirt portion of the dress, so I had to guess and shorten it by 5/8".

Although the finished product looks great, I don't ever want to sew this dress again. The matching the hip yoke seams at the sides is too much of a nightmare.

Sew Your Own Bra! Simplicity releases the 8339 pattern, 30A-44G

I have previously written on the availability of sewing patterns for people who have a smaller or larger bust and have difficulty finding tops and dresses that fit. Major brand sewing patterns*** provide straight size women with patterns for A-D dress cup sizes (in the case of Butterick, McCall's, and Simplicity) and B-DD dress cup sizes (in the case of Simplicity). Cashmerette provides plus size women with patterns for C-H dress cup sizes.

But what about those of us who want to sew our own bras? It's nice and all to have a closet full of tops and dresses that fit our bust, but for sewing-minded people in the bra-fitting community often lack easily-available sewing patterns in non-matrix sizes.

In comes Simplicity (of all brands) to the rescue! I don't typically expect a major brand to release such a pattern, but the 8339 Misses' Knit Sports Bras comes in sizes 30A-44G! As Simplicity is a US brand, they use inconsistent sizing nomenclature. Their sizing goes like: A, B, C, D, DD, E, F, and G so their G cup corresponds to a UK FF cup. I am super excited to sew this pattern in 30D. If you're looking for a sports bra that actually comes in your size, maybe try sewing this one and see how it turns out!

***Major brand sewing patterns include: Butterick, McCall's, Simplicity, and Vogue
